The Behavior Zone
The behavior zone is the name I use for my class management system. It consists of each child having a pocket with five index cards of different colors. Each color represents a separate action, which could be positive or negative. I have the colors listed below with their meanings.
YELLOW (ON TARGET): Students begin on this color everyday. It shows that students are behaving and doing exactly what is expected of them.
GREEN (GOOD): A student has done something helpful and nice beyond the rules. They may have aided a classmate/teacher or answered a difficult question. This serves as a positive reinforcement tool.
BLUE (TICKET): A student has done a couple good deeds. For their excellent behavior, the student will receive a ticket towards the drawing for the prize bin done on Fridays.
ORANGE (WARNING): A student has broken one of the classroom rules. This serves as a reminder to the student to get back on track.
PINK (NOTE): A student has broken two or more rules and are responsible for writing a note to their parents explaining their actions, what they should have done, and what they will do next time. The student will sign the note, as well as the teacher. Then, the student will take the note home for their parents/guardians to see, and they will sign the note as well. The student should bring the note back the following day with their parent/guardian's signature.
**To start the year, students may move up or down colors throughout the day. (I start off a little tough so students get the idea of how important it is to follow the rules. We want to ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable in our learning environment.)
After Christmas break, students may no longer change colors so easily. If a student is moved to orange or pink, they cannot move back up to a positive color. I am trying to get them to be more responsible and get ready for the next grade level.
